Who should seek Fertility Treatment?

One in six couples in Australia find it difficult to get pregnant. If you are facing the same challenges, don’t worry as you are not alone. Although there is a large focus solely on women seeking fertility treatment, men are also recommended to seek fertility treatment as well.
We recommend seeing a fertility specialist if you’re a woman and:
- You are under 35 years of age and have not been able to conceive for twelve months or more.
- You are 35 years or above and have not been able to conceive for six months.
- Have blocked fallopian tubes
- Have a history of endometriosis
- Have polycystic ovary syndrome
- Have abnormalities in the uterine structure such as fibroids, uterine septum, and adhesions
- Or you are worried or anxious about something that matters to you
We recommend seeing a fertility specialist if you’re a man and:
- You have no been able to conceive for the six months or more
- You have a history of testicular cancer, twisted testicles, or treatment with chemotherapy
As your fertility specialist, my team and I here to help you improve your chances of conception. We’re here to listen to your concerns and guide you through the most suitable treatment options available for your unique situation. This will involve a review of your medical history and require you to undergo several tests such as blood work. With those results, we’ll work closely with you to develop a tailored fertility treatment plan that you’re comfortable with.

Our Fertility Treatments
We provide a range of fertility treatment options that are tailored for your needs. Learn more about our fertility treatments below and get in touch with Dr Kokum to find out how we can assist you on your fertility journey.
In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)
IVF is where fertilization happens in the laboratory and outside the female body. This involves stimulation the ovaries with FSH injections and collecting eggs through a transvaginal approach under sedation. Using standard IVF (simply mixing eggs and sperm together) or using ICSI (injecting sperm inside the eggs) will depend on the sperm quality. Embryos then develop into blastocyst stage (in the embryoscope) while being monitored continuously without any external disturbance.
Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a common gynaecological problem affecting women of reproductive age. It occurs when the tissues of the uterus start growing on surfaces of other organs in the pelvis such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, outer surface of the uterus, pelvic cavity lining, vagina, cervix, vulva, bladder or rectum. Symptoms often include painful cramps in the lower abdomen, back or in the pelvis during menstruation.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder as well as one of the common causes of infertility among women. It is characterised by an ovulation dysfunction or impedance to the normal growth and release of eggs from the ovaries. It is most commonly seen in women of reproductive age and found rarely in women after menopause.
Laparoscopy
Laparoscopy is a procedure that enables your surgeon to look inside the abdominal cavity and pelvis using a laparoscope to diagnose and treat a variety of abnormal conditions. A laparoscope refers to a long, narrow telescope with a light source and video camera at the end.
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) involves using technology to place sperm in a woman’s uterus, giving the sperm higher chances of reaching the eggs for successful fertilisation.
Donor Program
Our Donor Program provides options for couples or individuals to use a sperm donor, donor eggs, donor embryos, and/or a surrogate for pregnancy. Find more information about our donor program here and by getting in touch.
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is an additional part within the IVF treatment process. ICSI involves using technology to inject a single sperm into an egg and help it enter or start fertilisation.
Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT)
Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) involves assessing the quality of embryos and finding the most suitable ones for transferring during IVF treatment. PGT involves checking embryos for conditions such as genetic diseases and chromosomal disorders.
Genetic Carrier Screening
Genetic Carrier Screening identifies couples or women who are at risk of having a child with a genetic disorder (which can severely impact the child’s future health). This is best carried out before conception to inform couples or women who are trying to conceive whether they’re carrying any inherited genetic conditions that they can potentially pass onto the child. Genetic Carrier Screening can be done either through a blood test or a mouth swab.
Ovulation Induction
Ovulation induction is a hormone therapy that stimulates your ovaries to release eggs and increase the chances of fertilisation when in contact with sperm. Women with irregular cycles who have been unable to conceive may be able to consider ovulation induction to increase their chances of pregnancy.
Cycle Tracking
Cycle tracking involves close monitoring of a woman’s hormone levels to determine the optimal time frame that will yield the highest chances of a successful pregnancy. This involves outlining the peak periods of ovulation, otherwise known as the ‘fertile window’ period.
Female Fertility
Fertility treatments for women can address a number of different reproductive health issues. Our female fertility treatments may address and treat any of the following: age and infertility, secondary infertility, premature menopause, irregular periods, blocked fallopian tubes. endometriosis, fibroids, polyps, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), and recurrent miscarriages.
Male Fertility
Male fertility treatments involve a medical history assessment, blood work, sperm testing, and other physical examinations to determine the cause of infertility in men. Male fertility tests are able to check key infertility factors in men which mainly include low production of sperm, abnormally shaped sperm that do not move optimally, and any blockage in the male reproductive tract.
