My 12-year-old son asked me recently if I had trouble having him, and if that is how I ended up as a fertility doctor. The truth is, I never had an initial ambition to become a fertility specialist. It was my life events and personal experiences that directed me down this path.
From Patient to Fertility Specialist
I came to Australia when I was 19 years old after winning a scholarship to study medicine at the University of Melbourne. It was the best thing that ever happened to me, but my journey was not without its challenges. I was 30 when I realised I needed help to conceive.
I felt the exact emotions that my patients feel: distress, frustration, anger at not being able to conceive naturally like others, and fear of the unknown. I doubted the reassurance my doctor gave me at the time. Being a patient myself has moulded me into the doctor I am today, bringing a unique gift of compassion and understanding to my practice.
Understanding the Emotional Toll
I have gone through the anger, fear, and uncertainty. I have struggled with appointment times while juggling work, and I have nervously waited for that pregnancy test, hoping it is positive. Sharing my story is one simple step to make my patients feel less scared and less isolated.
Empowering Patients Through Personalised Care
Whether you are a single woman keen on egg freezing, a single parent searching for donor sperm, a same-sex couple ready to start a family, or a couple dealing with male or female factor infertility, there is always one common thread: the deep desire to become a parent.
Exploring Non-Invasive and Natural Remedies
More often than not, before approaching IVF, my patients want to explore simple or surgical remedies to enhance their natural chances. This is a major focus in my practice. Sometimes it is the simplest medical advice or a minimally invasive laparoscopy that leads to pregnancy.
